Democratic Revolution Sweeps Ethiopia

After being frightened into silence for over two decades, the people of Ethiopia are finding their voice and calling for fundamental political change.

Thousands have been taking to the streets in recent weeks and months to peacefully protest against the ruling party. Expressing their collective anger at the injustices and widespread human rights violations taking place throughout the country and calling for democratic elections.

The People are Rising Up

The people have awakened, and overcoming fear and historic differences are beginning to unite. The two main ethnic groups are rallying under a common cause: freedom, justice, and the observation of their constitutionally acknowledged human rights. And the two major opposition parties, the Oromo Democratic Front (ODF) and Patriotic Ginbot 7 for Unity and Democracy (PG7) have formed an alliance in the fight to overthrow the incumbent regime, and are seeking to bring other opposition groups together.

The protests are dominated by people under 25 – 30 years of age; young people, connected to the world via social media who are no longer prepared to live in fear, as Seyoum Teshome, a university lecturer in central Ethiopia told the New York Times, “The whole youth is protesting. A generation is protesting.”

At the moment demonstrations are largely confined to Oromia and Ahmara, but as confidence grows there is every possibility that other regions could become involved, swelling numbers of protestors, overwhelming security forces.

When there is unity, and consistent, peaceful collective action, governments are eventually forced to listen (as has been demonstrated elsewhere in the world), and the attention of the international community is garnered. Ethiopia receives between a third and half of its federal budget in various aid packages from international donors; irresponsible donor countries which see Ethiopia as an ally in the so-called ‘war on terror’, a stable country in a region of instability – the illusion of stability maintained by keeping the populace suppressed.

To their shame utter the countries shame primary donors – America, Britain and the European Union – have repeatedly ignored the cries of the people, and turned a blind eye to human rights abuses perpetrated by the ruling party, which in many cases constitute state terrorism. It is neglect bordering on complicity.

Remain peaceful

This is a historic moment that could result in the overthrow of the government – a day longed for by the majority of Ethiopians – and usher in what activists and opposition groups have been campaigning for; democratic fair elections, and open political debate. None of which, despite the false pronouncements of Barack Obama and the like, have taken place under the EPRDF. Indeed Ethiopia has never known democracy.

It is essential that protestors remain largely peaceful, in spite of the government’s brutal response – and it has been brutal – and this does not turn into an ethnic conflict, with Tigrayan military forces loyal to the government pitched against groups from Oromo, Amhara, Ogaden and elsewhere. To take up arms on any significant scale would not only risk large numbers of casualties and national chaos, but would also allow the regime to propagate false claims of terrorism, attribute the uprising to destabilising influences and ignore the demands of protestors and opposition parties.

The government owns the sole telecommunications company as well as virtually all media outlets in the country, and seeks in every way possible to condition reporting by international media. They regularly close down the Internet in an attempt to make it difficult for protestors to communicate, and will no doubt attempt to manipulate the narrative surrounding the protests. But given the coverage flooding social media – much of which shows so-called ‘security personnel’ indiscriminately beating protestors – as well as first hand accounts, they will not be able to suppress or contaminate the truth.

Government’s Brutal Reaction

Ethiopia is made up of dozens of tribes and a variety of ethnic groups. The people of Oromo and Amhara (at 35% and 27% respectively of the population) make up the majority, and rightly feel they have been ignored and marginalised by the Tigray (6% of the population) TPLF dominated government – who also run the military. And it is in Oromia and the city of Gondar in Amhara that the protests have concentrated in recent weeks and months. Protests that the government has responded to with predictable violence.

It is impossible to state the exact numbers of protestors killed by government forces over the last week or two; Al Jazeera reports that “between 48 to 50 protesters were killed in Oromia,” but the satellite broadcaster, ESAT News, says that “several sources revealed that in the last few days alone [up to 10th August] at least 130 people have been murdered in the Oromo region…while 70 others have been massacred in Amhara.” No doubt the actual figure is a great deal higher than either of these.

Residents of the city of Bahir-Dar told The Guardian that, “soldiers fired live rounds at protesters. Hospitals have been filled by dead and wounded victims.” Thousands have been arrested, and ESAT reports, security forces have been demanding ransom payments from the families of young people who were detained after protesting in the capital Addis Ababa.

Despite the fact that freedom of assembly is clearly spelt out in the Ethiopian constitution (Article 30), the Prime Minister, Haile Mariam Dessalegn, announced a blanket ban on demonstrations, which, he said, “threaten national unity”. He called on the police – who need no encouragement to behave like thugs – to use all means at their disposal to stop protests occurring. The Communications Minister Getachew Reda chipped in, and called the protests illegal. All of which is irrelevant and of course misses the point completely.

Shocked and appalled at the ruling regime’s violent reaction to the protests, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights urged “the government to allow access for international observers into the affected regions to be able to establish what exactly transpired.” The spokesperson described information coming out of Amhara and Ormoia as “extremely alarming”, saying there had been “no genuine attempt at ensuring accountability” since reports of abuses by security forces began emerging back in December. The government’s arrogant, not to say cowardly reply was to reject the request; Getachew Reda, without a whiff of irony, told Al Jazeera that “the UN was entitled to its opinion but the government of Ethiopia was responsible for the safety of its own people.” Perhaps if Ethiopia’s main benefactors began to do their donor duty and apply pressure to the regime, they would be more conciliatory.

Refusing to engage with opposition groups and believing totally in the power of force and fear to control populations, dictatorships like the EPRDF instinctively respond to calls for freedom and justice by intensifying the very suppressive measures that are driving the popular uprising: The days of such totalitarian regime’s is fast coming to an end, it is a disintegrating body moving towards certain extinction.

Unstoppable Momentum for Change

For years the Ethiopian government and the country’s major donors have been propagating the lie that democracy and social development were flowering inside the country. As the people march that myth is now beginning to totally unravel.

The plain truth is that the EPRDF government, in power since 1991, is a vicious, undemocratic regime that has systematically suppressed the population for the last twenty-five years. There is no freedom of expression, the judiciary is a puppet of the state, political opposition leaders as well as journalists and anyone who openly expresses dissent are imprisoned (often tortured), their families persecuted. Humanitarian aid, employment and higher education opportunities are distributed on a partisan basis; and what economic growth there has been (dramatically downgraded by the IMF recently) has largely flowed into the coffers of government officials and supporters.

A social protest movement has been building with growing intensity since the 2010 general election (which like the ones before it, and since, was stolen by the EPRDF), and now the momentum appears to be unstoppable.

No matter how many courageous protesters the police and military shoot – and they will no doubt continue killing – arrest and intimidate, this time there is a real chance that the people will not be put down; they will no longer be denied their rights. They sense, as large numbers of people do everywhere, that an energy of change is sweeping through the world, that they are in tune with the times, and that this is the moment to unite and act.

Beginning in Oromia in March 2014 and intensified last November, large demonstrations were staged in opposition to government plans to expand the capital Addis Ababa onto agricultural land in Oromia. They began in Ginchi, a small town southwest of the capital, and spread to over 400 locations throughout the 17 zones of Oromia. At the same time demonstrators were marching in Gondar demanding, amongst other things, academic rights.

The ERDF reacted by deploying armed police and military that used “excessive and lethal force against largely peaceful protests.” Human Rights Watch (HRW) states that over 400 innocent people were killed; ESAT, however, puts the number even higher, saying that “at least 600 protesters were killed in the last nine months” in the Oromia region.

The protests in Oromia and Amhara have been ignited by specific issues – territory, land use, the stolen 2015 elections and the EPRD’s paranoid undemocratic hold on power – however these are not the underlying causes, but triggers, a series of final straws laid on top of two decades of violent suppression and injustice. Such violations are not just confined to these major regions, but are experienced more or less throughout the country; in Gambella, and the Ogaden region for example, where all manner of State-sponsored atrocities have been taking place.

The EPRDF government has attempted to rule Ethiopia through intimidation and fear. Such violent, crude methods will only succeed for so long: eventually the people will unite and revolt, as they are now doing, and all strength to their cause, which is wholly just.

Ethiopia`s Feyisa Lilesa marked his silver medal in the Olympic Games men`s marathon on Sunday by staging a dramatic protest against his country`s government, claiming his life could be in peril.

Lilesa, who was second to Kenyan favoutite Eliud Kipchoge, crossed his arms above his head as he finished the gruelling event as a protest against the Ethiopian government`s crackdown on political dissent.

“I have relatives in prison back home,” he said.

“If you talk about democracy they kill you. If I go back to Ethiopia maybe they will kill me, or put me in prison.

“It is very dangerous in my country. Maybe I have to go to another country. I was protesting for people everywhere who have no freedom.”

Human rights groups say that Ethiopian security forces have killed scores of people in recent weeks as authorities crack down on a wave of anti-government unrest in two key regions, central-western Oromia and Amhara in the north.

NAIROBI — When he crossed the Olympics marathon finish line, Feyisa Lilesa put his hands above his head in an “X.” Most of those who watched Lilesa’s spectacular silver medal performance didn’t know what that meant — or just how dangerous a protest they were watching.

Lilesa was protesting the Ethiopian government’s killing of hundreds of the country’s Oromo people — an ethnic majority that has long complained about being marginalized by the country’s government. The group has held protests this year over plans to reallocate Oromo land. Many of those protests ended in bloodshed. According to Human Rights Watch, more than 400 people have been killed since November.

For months, the Oromo have been using the same “X” gesture that Lilesa, 26, used at the finish line.

At a news conference following the race, he reiterated his defiant message.

“The Ethiopian government is killing my people, so I stand with all protests anywhere, as Oromo is my tribe,” Lilesa said. “My relatives are in prison and if they talk about democratic rights they are killed.”

It was a remarkable turn of events — within seconds, Lilesa had gone from a national hero to a man who might not be able to return to his home country. In addition to those killed, many Oromo protesters are currently languishing in prison.

In Ethiopia, the state broadcaster did not air a replay of the finish.

Lilesa was conscious of the danger. He immediately suggested that he might have to move somewhere else.

“If I go back to Ethiopia maybe they will kill me. If not kill me, they will put me in prison. I have not decided yet, but maybe I will move to another country,” he said.

It wasn’t the first time an Ethiopian athlete had considered defecting after competition. In 2014, four of the country’s runners applied for asylum in the United States after disappearing from the international junior track championships in Eugene, Ore.

The plight of the Oromo and the Ethiopian government’s use of force against civilians have received some attention recently, but nothing as prominent as Lilesa’s defiance. Earlier this month, the U.S. Embassy in Addis Ababa saidthat it was “deeply concerned” about the most recent killing of protesters. But likely because Ethiopia remains a U.S. ally in the fight against Somali Islamist group Al-Shabab, American officials have been reluctant to offer any further condemnation.

Oromo dissidents, particularly those outside Ethiopia, have been active on social media about their cause. As soon as Lilesa crossed the finish line, tweets and Facebook posts went up with pictures of their new folk hero. Ethiopia is one of Africa’s fastest growing nations, and it seen by many as a model of economic potential. The government has played down the protests, saying earlier this month that “the attempted demonstrations were orchestrated by foreign enemies from near and far in partnership with local forces.”

Lilesa has been racing internationally for Ethiopia for more than eight years, and holds one of the world’s fastest ever marathon times: 2:04:52.

The Bravest Olympian in Rio — Ethiopia’s Feyisa Lilesa Risks Death But Speaks Out About Killings of Oromo Protesters in Ethiopia After Earning Olympic Silver in Marathon

RIO DE JANEIRO — Plenty of storylines emerged from the 2016 Olympic marathon. Eliud Kipchoge stamped himself as the greatest marathoner of all time by winning the race in 2:08:44. Galen Rupp earned the bronze medal to cap a stellar meet for the United States distance squad. But those are sporting achievements. What Ethiopia’s Feyisa Lilesa did today goes far beyond running.

As Lilesa crossed the finish line in 2:09:54 to earn the silver medal, he threw his hands above his head to form an “X”. Afterward, at the post-race press conference on a dais 50 yards from the marathon finish line, he spoke slow, powerful, chilling words, explaining the gesture was meant to demonstrate his solidarity with his Oromo people in Ethiopia. Amnesty International reports that at least 97 Oromo were killed inpeaceful anti-government protests earlier this month. This is the latest in a string of protests that Human Rights Watch estimates have resulted in over 400 deaths in all. In addition to the killings, many more have been arrested and detained by the government.

By speaking out Lilesa said he cannot return to Ethiopia because his life or freedom would be in jeopardy. “If I go back to Ethiopia, maybe they kill me,” Lilesa said. “If not kill me, they put [me] in prison. If not put me in prison, they block me at airport. After that I don’t move anywhere.”

Nonetheless he felt he had to speak out. “[The] Ethiopian government [is] killing my people. So wherever I stand, [I stand] with Oromo protest anywhere because Oromo is my tribe. At this time, any people, all my relatives in prison, in prison. Daily I worry, I worry…If you talk, you write [about the protest], they kill you. So I stand with Oromo protest anywhere,” Lilesa said.

Currently, Ethiopia is ruled by the Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front, which is mostly controlled by members of the minority Tigrayan ethnic group. The more recent protests have called for political reform and an end to the marginalization of Oromo and Amhara people. In December, 40 people were killed after members of the Oromo ethnic group — which is much larger than the Tigrayan ethnic group — protested against attempted government land seizures, according to Amnesty.

We spoke to Lilesa on video after the press conference (the video is below; video was not allowed in the press conference) and he talked about his wife and two children back home in Ethiopia. When asked if he was worried about their safety he said he would try to call them this evening, but “maybe they are arrested at this time.” He said that it can be dangerous to even answer the door in Ethiopia as his family doesn’t know if it will be a soldier or not. Lilesa said that for those Oromo not dead or locked up, their “freedom” is hollow.

“When you get freedom, you support only the government,” Lilesa said. “In America, Europe, Germany, England, demonstrations [are ok].”

Lilesa said he is unsure of where to go from here. Lilesa said he would consider relocating to Kenya or perhaps the United States.

Olympic marathon champion Eliud Kipchoge offered his sympathy for Lilesa.

“So so sorry for Lilesa,” Kipchoge said. “Sad news, shocking these soldiers… can still kill everybody.”

We asked Lilesa if anyone with the Ethiopian team knew he was going to speak out. He said, “You cannot talk (about this).” That may be the case in Ethiopia, but Lilesa chose the biggest sporting stage of all to speak out today. He is slated to receive his Olympic marathon medal tonight at the closing ceremony and will have an even bigger platform to make a statement.

Athletics – Ethiopia’s Lilesa makes protest gesture at marathon finish

By Scott Malone | RIO DE JANEIRO

Ethiopia’s Feyisa Lilesa held his arms over his head, wrists crossed, as he finished second at the Olympic marathon on Sunday in a gesture of support for members of his Oromo tribe who have been protesting at government plans to reallocate farmland.

Plans to allocate land surrounding the capital for development prompted fierce demonstrations in November and spread for months, in the country’s worst unrest in more than a decade.

Ethiopia has long been one of the world’s poorest nations but has industrialised rapidly in the past decade. However, reallocating land is a thorny issue for Ethiopians, many of whom are subsistence farmers.

Authorities scrapped the scheme in January, but protests flared again this month over the continued detention of opposition demonstrators.

Rights groups say hundreds have been killed. The government disputes the figures and says illegal protests by “anti-peace forces” have been brought under control.

“Oromo is my tribe … Oromo people now protest what is right, for peace, for a place,” Lilesa explained after his silver-medal performance, adding that he feared he would face consequences for the gesture when he returned home.

“Maybe I move to another country … you get the freedom if you support only the government. You cannot work without that.”

OLF is the immune system of the Oromo nations

By. Baro keno Deressa

OLF is an organization established in 1973 by Oromo nationalists to culminate the uncoordinated resistance by brave sons and daughters of Oromo people against colonialist hegemony as well as oppression and suppression of the Oromo people and their culture and to promote self-determination for the Oromo people against “Abyssinian colonial rule”.  The birth of the OLF was a turning point in the history of Oromo people’s struggle for freedom. Now, nationally and internationally the Oromo people are intensifying the struggle for its rights more than any time in the history of the Liberation struggle.  Our struggle is now transforming from limited sector of the nation to the popular revolution.  The OLF articulated the Oromo national question and skillfully set the target for the Oromo national struggle. As an organization the OLF deserves all the credit for almost all political gains achieved by the Oromo people.

Why the OLF is the immune system of the Oromo people?  Firstly, what is immune system?

The immune system is made up of a network of special cells, proteins, tissues, and organs, defends people against germs and microorganisms every day in order to keep people healthy and preventing infections. The immune system is the body’s defense against infectious organisms and other invaders, through a series of steps called the immune response, the immune system attacks organisms and substances that invade body systems and cause disease.

The century long colonial power in Ethiopian empire have committed and still committing all inhuman atrocities, against Oromo people and other oppressed nations. These act of colonial rule create many challenges to form unity-in-diversity.  Namely:

  1. Challenge of our history: The Oromo peoples believes that we have to confess our past history to build a better future. There are times in our lives when we have to realize our past is precisely what it is, and we cannot change it. But we can change the story we tell ourselves about it, and by doing that, we can change the future.
  2. Challenge of Socio-economic inequalities
  3. Absence of appropriate constitutional settlement
  4. Absence of institutions for democracy and development

In order to solve those critical issues the Oromo peoples are promoting:

  1. Nations are able to manage their political and social disputes peacefully, without lapsing into conflict, or sustain economic growth without creating huge inequalities, critically depend on the quality of the relevant national institutions.
  2. Support the principles of democracy such as the forming of government based on the will of the majority, respect for the rule of law, and respect for basic freedoms.

Oromo peoples believes that there is no common agreement will be achieved while the nations are living such parallel lives:

  • Colonizers are living as the killers while the oppressed nations are dying
  • Colonizers are refusing to accept and respect the right for self-determinations while oppressed nations are crying for their right
  • Colonizers are working to divide and rule while the oppressed nations are fighting for unity.
  • Colonizers are looting and enriching their close families while oppressed nations  are suffering from natural and man made disasters
  • Colonizers are cheating while oppressed nations are believing

Most of us (The Oromo peoples, Oppressed nations, former colonizers) now agree that we do not want military rule, our visions and practice of democracy are not uniform, showing a fundamental lack of consensus on this important question as well.  That is why OLF is insisting on the basic demand of the Oromo people and other oppressed nations that is, full freedom to have a legal right on self –determination.  In order to achieve this goal OLF is fulfilling his tasks as immune system:

  • Detecting the enemy plan and tactic in order to expose to the public and preparing action plan.
  • Attacking the enemy plan and distracting their goal in order to empower our peoples struggle and oppressed nations for freedom.
  • Leading our goal forward on the ground in multiple ways, Planning next step and promoting international diplomacy

What are the practical action of this fact:

  1. Strengthen our freedom fighters in all corners of our country
  2. Organizing the Oromo people from rural area to the heart of Oromia
  3. Strengthen our partners by empowering the oppressed nations. To give you an example, forming Peoples Alliance for Freedom and Democracy (PAFD).
  4. Promoting Oromo nations demand on the international arena. To give you an example of this fact and motivation of point number 3: let me give you one remark of the recent European union response on the roundtable discussion:

Rroundtable discussion of Oppressed Peoples of Ethiopia at the European Parliament

PAFD – a pan-Ethiopian alliance founded in October 2015 – to European policy-makers and other interested parties. To that end, representatives of PAFD presented the alliance’s goals and guiding principles and provided updates on the deteriorating human rights situation in Ethiopia.

Mr Abdirahman Mahdi, the PAFD International Relations Bureau, drew attention to the opportunities that PAFD can offer and elaborated on why it is only through the concerted effort of all of Ethiopia’s suppressed groups that democratic change and freedom for all Ethiopians can be brought about.

Dr Baro Keno Deressa, in turn, gave a chilling account of how the Ethiopian government continues to harass, forcefully disappear, torture and kill ordinary Oromo People, Ogaden people, Sidama people, Gambella and Benishangul peoples and other oppressed nations in Ethiopian Empire with impunity, stressing that urgent action and strong alliances are needed to put an end to the immense suffering of Oromo’s and other Oppressed nations in Ethiopia Empire.

Member of European parliament and various delegations:

  • highlighted the importance of giving a voice to the voiceless and reiterated their commitment to support the Oppressed peoples.
  • confirms the significance of alliances such as PAFD in order to overcome further crisis.
  • Other influential delegate underlined urgency of the situation in Ethiopia.

Conclusions:

Nobody has right to tell us about peace because we Oromo people are nation of peace, nation of democratic rule, nation of justice and equality. We are always against all injustices and we are ready to defend all kinds of violations.

Nobody has right to tell us about generosity, because we are nation of love. We have helped and supporting innocent nations of Amhara’s, tiger’s when they come to our country to collect coffee or to work in the agriculture sector, we have treating them when they were sick, we have respected them as equal human being despite their social status, we are loving them us our families not as strangers.

Nobody has right to tell us about patriotism because we have nation of heroes, for century long there is no Ethiopian colonial rule survive without the patriotic act of Oromo sons and daughters.  But our price was humiliation and death  “when it comes to power and money Oromo’s are the last to touch the desk and when it comes to the human-right and equality Oromo’s are the first to be victim of the system”.  Now, when we say it is enough and it is time to build my country Oromia and regain my right as human being, individuals or groups with colonial system and mind have to setback and respect the demand of oppressed nations.  Refusing this fact and try to create all kinds of analysis, tactics and strategies will leads the Ethiopian Empire, horn of Africa and world in general to the hell of 21st century.

OLF recognize the critical role of empowering ourselves in order to keep up with the rest of the world and more importantly to keep pace with our enemies, implement proactive initiatives for adapting strategic and tactical approaches in order to bring effective solution. In order to facilitate the faction of our immune system-OLF, I call, To the Oromo people, to the Oromo intellectuals and to the Oromo political Organizations, dear brothers and sisters supporting and strengthen OLF means empowering our peoples struggle, promoting our goals and eradicating colonization.

Victory to the Oromo people!

Few year later after gen. Waaqoo Guutuu fired the first liberation bullet, educated Oromo sons wrote the Oromo liberation manifesto describing the evil of the Habasha colonialism that was responsible for the conversion of Shaggar into Shawaa. Since Haylamariyam Gamada wrote the Maccaa & Tulama constitution, another Oromo genius Dr. Haile Fida articulated the process through which the Oromo people can reach the goal set forth by the pioneers before him. Mean time, in the up and down of the Oromo political jungle, tens of thousands have lost their lives and yet, Gen. Waaqoo’s prophesy became the reality of our era.  The kids whom Gen. Waaqoo envisioned were born in late 1990s and they are about to uproot the Habasha colonialism out Oromia.

Interestingly, even though our great heroes such as Muli’s abba Gadaa, Hselemoo Qilxuu, Mammo Mazamir, Baroo Tumsaa and Badhoo Dachaasaa got killed by the lovers of Shawaa and Ethiopia, multitude of thousands heroes have risen and took up the liberation torch and they are marching forward today.  If there is a bad news in all these, it will be the birth and death of few low Oromo social class that are always susceptible to the sickness that forces them wanting to wash the feet of their Habasha Masters and leak the Habasha bloody hands.

What is essential for us to understand therefore, is that the enemies of the Oromo liberation movement are not the real Habashas but our own mentally ill men who can never redeem themselves from the evil of Shawaa identity crisis.

These types of men always seek certain political position under their Habasha masters because they feel they are incapable of standing on their own as an Oromo and enjoy life.  If only they are able to think independently, they could make a difference, but their ability to surpass their master’s influence is none existent.  For these weak minded creatures, what is most important is not learning how showa came into being but the political position they get under their masters.  There is no doubt that these weak minded men would work very hard under their masters command than on their own as an Oromo.

When it comes to serve the Oromo nation, these weak minded people would recoil in horror at the thought of becoming free from their inferiority but don’t give a second thought to stealing their Habasha masters mind and implement it.

What these mentally inferior little men can’t imagine is what Minilik’s army congregation boastful dance would sound like after it was done with raping the Tulamaa Oromo of Shaggar, burn the houses down with little children and old people in it.  But I wish to ask these inferiors how would they like to wake up some morning and find that several thousand soldiers, together with over 3,000 horse men, 10,000 donkeys  and 12,000 mules, had moved into Shaggar and started killing all Oromos who lived in Birbirssaa, Dhakaa Araraaraa, Qaban’aa, Laga Harree etc.  For me, the challenges that our people faced that fateful day were immediate. From our oral family history, and from the books eye witnesses wrote, we learn that hundreds of thousands of homes were set a blaze and all the people in it were burned down.

Instead of looking back to the horror our people have suffered back then, our inferior slaves end up developing a good relationship with the rapist and murderers of their own great grand parents and now they are trying to undermine all the gains the Oromo people have made over the years.
What is true though is that these inferiors don’t understand that they are stepping over the line and they will be sorry some day for their evil actions.

It is true that having an inferior few amongst us is not new, nor is it unique to us.  But those who doubt the importance of having freedom must understand that they are not only seek to diminish their own self worth but the liberty of 50 million people.  That means, their feeble attempt to justify such conduct only brings more forcibly to mind those explosive actions where one will be forced to get rid of the enemy  before the enemy itself.

Down with Shawaa and with Ethiopia!
Oromia will be free!

LakK: kwo – 052-2016 REF.NO: oif-052-2016

Guyyaa: Hag. 23, 2016 Date : Aug. 23, 2016

Statement of the Central Committee of the Front for Independence of Oromia (KWO/FIO)

On Organizational Matters:

The Central Committee of the Front for Independence of Oromia (FIO) held an extra-ordinary

meeting on August 21, 2016. This historic meeting was held at the time the Oromo people’s

quest for democracy, justice, political & economic rights and independence of our Country

Oromia has reached its climax.

After listening to the organizational report presented by the Executive Committee, the Central

Committee of FIO thoroughly discussed and reflected on the report and commended the

Executive Committee’s effort in implementing policies and carrying out day-to-day operations of

the organization. The leadership also took note of the strengths and weaknesses confronting our

organization and recommendations and further steps formulated to build on strengths and lessons

were drawn from our organizational weaknesses.

On Oromo Protest:

Front for Independence of Oromia (FIO) once again condemn the ongoing mass atrocity against

the Oromo people by the minority TPLF regime ruling the Ethiopian empire. The Oromo people

and other oppressed people in the empire have been demanding for their unalienable rights for

the last quarter of a century. In the last nine months, more than ever before, Oromo people’s

quest for democracy, justice, political rights and independence has reached the summit of its

growth. According to UN Charter, International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, to which

Ethiopia is signatory and enshrined to its constitution, the Oromo people are entitled without any

limitation to the right of SELF-DETERMINATION UP TO SECESSION. The Oromo people

have the right to pursue free life, liberty and happiness as citizens of the world under democratic

government of its own.

The will, determination, and commitment of brave Oromo youth to defend their fatherland under

persistent heinous brutality of the occupying Tigrean elite military force have been unwavering.

Our people are so committed to break the shackles of colonialism, economic marginalization,

Wajira.kwo@gmail.com

and denial of fundamental right for once and for all. To this glorious end, thousands have been

paying ultimate sacrifice, tens of thousands languishing in make-shift detention centers,

thousands disabled, and many more have been displaced.

Once again the bloodthirsty TPLF lead regime systematic mass slaughter of the Oromo people is

unparalleled by any of its predecessors colonial regime ruled the Ethiopian empire. The

magnitude and the extent of atrocities inflicted on our people are paramount to genocide. Despite

continued ethnic cleansing perpetrated by the Tigrean occupying force; the current Oromo

protest has proved the will of Oromo people and their unflinching resolve to be free of colonial

rule as well as cruel exploitation. This bravery of Oromo youth reassures the Oromo nation that

the rebirth of sovereign Oromia is more than certain. It is written with the blood of Oromo youth,

and is built to the bones of Oromo in all walks of life; FIO resolves to dismantle colonial empire

and build Democratic Republic of Oromia on its demise in which all human races would live

with dignity.

On ODF and PG7 Alliance:

The best policy for overcoming difficulties, defeating the enemy, and building new and free

Oromia is to consolidate and expand Anti-Abyssinian colonialist ideology and build it at national

level. However, there are some traitors playing a destructive role from within, namely,

capitulation, defeatists elements, and the mouthpiece of global conspiracy.

Contrary to unbending generation-long struggle of Oromo people to liberate Oromia from

Abyssinian colonial yoke, time and time again certain individuals renewed their vows to

obliterate precious gain achieved by the Oromo nation. These individuals are traitors that never

rest of working against our noble causes. They never get tired of choosing their masters. They

were married to TPLF at the end of the twentieth century; now, at the dawn of 21st century

engaged to an anti-Oromo reminiscent of Amhara hegemonic element, namely the PG7.

The Oromo democratic Front (ODF) led by Mr. Lenco Lata deserted the unity of purpose with

the Oromo organizations and forged “unity” with the colonizers. ODF’s lack of vision and

courage to accept the fact that the only solution for Oromo and others colonized nations remain

decolonization; is therefore serious mistake in the history of the Oromo’s liberation struggle and

tantamount suicidal. However, their complete debacle remains theirs! The time for the liberation

of Oromia, Ogadenia, Sidama, Afar, and the rest nations under Abyssinian colonial yoke will

never be far, although we believe that the struggle will be very demanding that needs enormous

courage, determination, unity of purposes, liberation of mind, indefatigability and great deal of

optimism.

Ancient and modern records equally witness that foreign elements can easily be controlled than

infiltrators that serve the purpose of an enemy. Genuine nationalists must always be on the

Wajira.kwo@gmail.com

lookout for “wolves in sheep’s clothing,” expose their criminal activities with factual evidence

and warn the people not to unwittingly serve the Abyssinian purposes. The failure of the society

to weed those insiders out is the beginning of a total doom. As once, John F. Kennedy said,

“Mistakes remain a mistake only if people fail to correct it”. In Oromo struggle, repeated

mistakes have been committed, and Oromo leaders as well as the public failed to learn from

yesterday as we live to see it today.

Therefore, FIO condemns the “Alliance between ODF and PG7” and calls up on the members,

sympathizers, and genuine Oromos in the ranks of ODF leadership not to serve a dupe of

Abyssinian agents.

On Non-Violence Struggle:

There are historical cases when nonviolent resistance has been powerful and fruitful. Behind

every successful “peaceful struggle,” there is wellorganized armed resistance. Kenneth Kaunda,

the former Zambian freedom fighter and President, said, “I was laughed at by the colonizers

until there had been violence. Then I suddenly became the voice of reason and the colonial

powers wanted to make me a spokesperson.” Nelson Mandela’s ANC had to introduce limited

armed struggle to deal with the South African apartheid regime. Martin Luther King also was

taken more seriously after the cities began to go up in flames in the sixties. There would be no

Martin Luther King Day if there had not been a Malcolm X.

The grandiose Oromo protest lit in every corner of Oromia has set a precedent and became the

beacon of hope for all oppressed nations with its shining victories against the occupying Tigrean

force. TPLF has dealt violently with peaceful protestors, killing over thousand Oromos in nine

months, arresting tens of thousands innocent people, torturing, and humiliating millions in

public, including many children. They do not hesitate to shoot a baby as long as it is an Oromo.

The despicable torture, intimidation, harassments, and psychological war to cause fear and

insecurity between Oromo nationals who aspire for their national independence is the pillar of

TPLF’s ethnic cleansing policy. Waves of imprisonment that have purely targeted the Oromo

profiles such as Bekele Gerba and extrajudicial killings are not novel phenomena; rather are the

25 years old routine that have been the part and parcels of TPLF’s agenda of cultural genocide,

economic apartheid, political marginalization, and territorial colonization.

Given that we face a regime that relies exclusively on force and kills our children in the street,

we have to adopt armed resistance to disarm those that are violent, the state apparatus – the army

and the police. The People like Oromo – without a legitimate representation in the empire of

Ethiopia – must have an alternative to lying down and submitting to genocide. Oromo grand

protest in by-itself is not going to bring down the Tigrean regime armed to its teeth. The Oromo

people has given peace a tremendous chance, and exhausted all the possible means ranging from

Wajira.kwo@gmail.com

“petition to the TPLF government” to pleading with the western nations to reduce bloodshed.

What choice do the people have other than resolving to bring sufficient pressure on Tigrean

colonizers through meticulously coordinated non-violent and armed struggles?

Demonstrations and propaganda on internet or social media will not defeat the neo-fascist

regime. Fascism, colonialism, and imperialist aggression are defeated by unity among our

nationalists. Colonial vestige can only be up rooted by facing it with equal or more sophisticated

tools they are using against us. FIO has been working hand-in-hand with Oromo people to this

end, and herewith resolved to renew its commitment to continue building the decolonizing

instrument.

On the Unity of the Oromo Political Forces:

Although Oromo people and nationalists have been engaged in a life and death struggle under

different organizational labels, their ultimate goal remains the liberation of their land from the

yoke of Abyssinian colonial system. Having different political groups/parties with competing

ideas may be healthy for a nation, but a multitude of liberation organizations with no

coordination and a centralizing strategic core has proved to be detraction. FIO has been working

and will continue working relentlessly with Oromo nationalists outside our organizations and

endeavor to unite the entire Oromo nation to do away with disintegration and whatever manner

undesirable.

There cannot be any other hope for our nation unless we act as one big family, not as many

separate one. FIO calls upon all Oromo political forces to unite their arms against the enemy and

to take none reconciliatory course to march the people to the final destiny. It is FIO’s prime duty

to guide our people on the right path, which takes us in unison, quickly to the independence of

our country.

Call to International Communities:

The minority Tigrean regime has garnered strong financial, military, intelligence, and

technological support from the western nations under the banner of “War on Terror.” In the past

20 years, the Tigrean government, from the US alone has received over $40 Billion Dollars in

assistance. Despite the Oromo activists and international human rights groups report of the

Ethiopian regime’s gross human right violation, the US and EU continued funneling money to

help building the TPLF’s repressive machine. The Ethiopian regime has grown to one of the few

nations on earth that terrorize the very people they were obligated to protect. The regime that

supposed to be “terrorist watch dog,” has evolved to an “authorized terrorist” that brutalize its

own people. Instead of limiting the expansion of terrorism, TPLF has changed its role to sawing

Wajira.kwo@gmail.com

the seed of terrorism. The Ethiopian regime has become the agent of destabilization in the horn

region. EU and US is pursuing a lost cause in a long haul.

Giving deaf ears to the cry of subjugated people, and lending blind eye to the pool of bloodshed

by the surrogate regime will eventually haunt the west. It is therefore, FIO’s sincere call to the

western nations to show their solidarity for the Oromo people not the killer Tigrean regime. FIO

joins millions of Oromo people urging the US and EU take a meaningful action beyond the usual

“we are highly concerned with the situation in Ethiopia” statement. The regime that fails short of

serving the need of its own people cannot deliver on its international obligations. The regime that

mistreats its own citizens loses every moral ground to be trusted with “War on Terror.” The

regime that is busy fighting its own people may not be able to accomplish its global

responsibilities.

It is FIO’s sincere belief, the socalled aid is funding genocide, torture, imprisonment, and ethnic

cleansing. Deliberately ignoring widespread injustice in Ethiopia and maintaining the support for

the tyrannical government, do not only damage the long term American and European interest

but also violates the ideals of freedom, justice, and democracy.

Hence, FIO warns all international communities, the U.S. and E.U. in particular, the situation in

Ethiopia is a ticking time bomb. Act now before it is too late, and stop supporting the murderous

regime prior to the country succumb into full-fledged civil war.

On other Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples In Ethiopian Empire:

FIO upholds the ideals on decolonization, humanity, respects for basic rights and human

dignity-and our staunch believe in human liberty, independence, choice for decent life

and respect for democratic and God given rights for peoples of the Empire and beyond.

FIO unequivocally condemns the crime committed against people of Gambella, Ogaden,

Amhara and currently the people of Wolqayit Tsagade. FIO supports their struggle, and

praise their heroic act in pursuit of justice. By any possible means necessary, we stand by

their fierce fight against fascist TPLF regime.

Oromo has the will, TPLF the power, surely, the Oromo people shall Prevail!

Oromia Shall Be Free!

Oromo Communities in North America salute Fayissa Lellisa, our courageous athlete and silver medalist at Rio Olympics!

Feyissa Lellisa made a courageous historic decision in his life as he run marathon and earned a silver medal at Rio Olympics on August 21, 2016. The Oromo Communities in North America are elated by his marathon victory, but above all, grateful for his courageous decision to bring the sufferings of the Oromo people to the attention of the world community. After his victory Feyissa could have taken his medal home, celebrated his hard-won victory and continued his life quietly. But, he decided to use the moment to inform the global community what his Oromo relatives in O)Oromia-Ethiopia are enduring every day. He couldn’t keep quiet when his brothers and sisters are beaten, arrested and killed for participating in peaceful protests. Instead, he crossed his arms above his head (symbol of Oromo resistance) and protested openly as completed his marathon race. He repeated the same protest sign at the press conference after the award ceremony. Then he told journalists “[The] Ethiopian government [is] killing my people. So wherever I stand, [I stand] with Oromo protest anywhere because….all my relatives [are] in prison. Daily I worry…If you talk, you write [about the protest], they kill you. So, I stand with Oromo protest anywhere.”

Fayissa: Oromo Communities in North America admire your selfless sacrifice. You raised your arms, protested against injustice, lifted our spirits and elevated the cause of the Oromo people to a global stage. History will never forget what you did in Rio!

Congratulations!

Olympic Marathoner Who Defied Ethiopian Government at the Finish Line Hasn’t Returned Home

By MORGAN WINSOR

(ABC News) — Ethiopian marathon runner Feyisa Lilesa has not returned to his home country since making anti-government demonstrations after he won a silver medal at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, ABC News has learned.

Lilesa’s agent Federico Rosa confirmed to ABC News today that the runner did not fly home to Ethiopia with the country’s Olympics team Monday.

“He didn’t go back to Ethiopia,” Rosa wrote in an email. “Plan for future not clear yet, we will know more in some days.”

As Lilesa crossed the finish line in second place in the men’s marathon race Sunday, he lifted his arms above his head and crossed his wrists to make an “X.” The 26-year-old made the gesture again on the podium and later explained he was protesting against the killings of the Oromo people in his home country.

“The Ethiopian government is killing my people, so I stand with all protests anywhere, as Oromo is my tribe,” Lilesa told reporters at a news conference after the race. “My relatives are in prison and if they talk about democratic rights, they are killed.”

Lilesa, whose whereabouts could not be confirmed by ABC News, then warned that he could be thrown in jail or killed if he stepped on Ethiopian soil after making that gesture.

“If I go back to Ethiopia, maybe they will kill me. If not kill me, they will put me in prison. I have not decided yet, but maybe I will move to another country,” he said.

Protesters chant slogans during a demonstration over what they say is unfair distribution of wealth in the country at Meskel Square in Ethiopia’s capital Addis Ababa, Aug. 6, 2016.

A GoFundMe page set up to support Lilesa’s bid for asylum has raised over $123,000 so far. Lilesa’s agent did not confirm whether the runner was seeking asylum.

The daring gesture that Lilesa made in Rio is the same one people have made for months in protests across the Oromia region, home to Ethiopia’s largest ethnic group, the Oromo.

Anti-government protests have rocked Oromia since November. The demonstrators and opposition members were initially protesting against the Ethiopian government’s plan to integrate infrastructure development and expand the municipal boundary of the capital, Addis Ababa, into surrounding towns in Oromia. Some feared the urban expansion would cause Oromo farmers to lose their traditional lands.

The largely peaceful protesters were met by federal security forces that have allegedly used excessive and lethal force to quell the demonstrations. More than 400 people are estimated to have been killed, thousands injured and tens of thousands arrested since November 2015, according to a report by Human Rights Watch based on over 125 interviews with witnesses, victims and government officials.

The Ethiopian government canceled the proposed Addis Ababa Integrated Development Master Plan in mid-January. But activists and researchers said that hasn’t stemmed demonstrations or the alleged crackdown in Oromia as protester grievances have swelled because of the government response.

Earlier this month, the United Nations urged the Ethiopian government to allow for international observers to conduct independent and transparent probes into the allegations. Ravina Shamdasani, a spokeswoman for the Office of the U.N. High Commissioner forHuman Rights, said it’s critical for human rights experts to have access to areas where there are reports of ongoing arbitrary arrests, intimidation and harassment.

“We call on the government to ensure that the rights to freedom of peaceful assembly and expression are protected and that those detained for exercising these rights are promptly released,” Shamdasani told reporters at a news conference in Geneva.

As for Lilesa, Ethiopia’s Communications Minister Getachew Reda recently told CNN that Feyisa Lilesa “is entitled to make” a “political statement.” Reda called the marathon runner “an Ethiopian hero” and said he “shouldn’t at all be worried” to return home.

“I can assure you nothing is going to happen to his family nothing is going to happen to him,” the minister told CNN this week.

The Federal Government Communication Affairs Office of Ethiopia did not immediately respond to ABC News’ request for comment.
