Press freedom in Ethiopia is dwindling in light of recent anti-government protests and the severe drought in the Horn of Africa state, according to a journalists’ association.

Two journalists and a translator were arbitrarily detained for 24 hours on Thursday when reporting on the protests in Oromia, according to a statement issued by the Foreign Correspondents’ Association of East Africa (FCAEA) on Monday. Bloomberg correspondent William Davison and freelance journalist Jacey Fortin, along with their translator, were not given any reason for their detention. Their phones and identification cards were taken during the arrest.

Protests among the Oromos, who constitute Ethiopia’s largest ethnic group, have been ongoing since November 2015 and were originally directed against plans by the federal government to expand the capital Addis Ababa. At least 140 protesters were killed between November 2015 and January, according to Human Rights Watch (HRW). The Addis expansion plans were dropped in January but the protests—which have morphed into a general expression of dissatisfaction with the government among Oromos—have continued and demonstrators are stillbeing subjected to “lethal force,” HRW said on February 22. The Ethiopian government has said that “destructive forces” —including some from neighboring Eritrea—have hijacked the protests and would be dealt with decisively.

Subscribe now – Free phone/tablet charger worth over $60Davison told Newsweek that the risks of reporting on certain topics in Ethiopia is too high because of the threat of detainment. “It was a shock to be held overnight in a prison cell and not be given any explanation of what we were being held for,” says Davison. The “very heavy and militarized response” to the Oromo protests “raises the chance that reporters are going to be obstructed from doing their work,” he says.

The FCAEA said that the detentions marked “a worrying escalation” in Ethiopia, which already has a poor record for allowing journalists to operate freely. Ethiopia was ranked 142nd out of 180 countries in terms of press freedom in 2015 by non-profit organization Reporters Without Borders, which recorded six newspapers closing and more than 30 cases of journalists fleeing abroad in 2014. “Ethiopia is well-known for its tough stance on journalists but this is a worrying spike of arbitrary detention of media workers at a time of increased interest in Ethiopia,” says Ilya Gridneff, chairman of FCAEA. “Journalism is not a crime and those in Ethiopia should not be treated as criminals.”

The Konso people of South Ethiopia are among the southern Ethiopian Cushitic peoples with the strongest cultural, economic and political ties with the Borana Oromo. The Borana Oromo consider the Konso peoples participation as vital to the fulfillment of its cultural and ritual ceremonies. The Borana say, “ Konsoon Dhirrii”, a saying which implies that their presence among the Borana Oromo is highly desired and appreciated. No tribe or Nationality in SNNPR has as close a relation to the Borana as the Konso.

The Borana respect the Konso so much so that they used to grant them unlimited access to their natural resources. These two peoples have the strongest economic ties for centuries. This was the reason behind the strong political alliance between the Oromo political parties such as the OLF and Konso opposition party during the transitional government period. One of the prominent political figures of the the 1990’s among the Konso people was a certain medical doctor ( he is now deceased) by the name Dr. Shakka, who reportedly was a strong ally of the Oromo people and therefore was persecuted by the TPLF regime until his death. He and his colleagues understood the cultural and economic ties the Konso people have with the Oromo and it was their wish that the Konso rather be a special zone in Oromia than be part of SNNPR. They are geographically also close to the Borana zone and the largest Konso diaspora live in the Borana land than any where else in the world.

The Konso are the people with amazing work ethic and regarded as the most hard working people and environmentally friendly people in Ethiopia. Their environmental conservation technics are among the most admired in Africa and as such recognized by UNESCO as a cultural heritage ( if I am not mistaken).
Because of their disloyalty to the TPLF’s regime, the Burji and Konso special districts were among the few places in SNNPR with the worst state sponsored repressive rules. Their elites were mercilessly persecuted just like the elites of the Oromo people. The paid high prices for choosing to defend their human dignity.

Just like in other places, the TPLF have time and again tried to instigate conflict between the Borana Oromo and the Konso in order to weaken the power of the Borana Oromo in the south. The Borana had strong political alliances with most of its neighboring tribes and nationalities through so doing, had an enduring peace in that part of Africa for generations, through peace building strategies/mechanisms such as the “Nagaa Boranaa”, maintaining the peace of the Borana Oromo. The TPLF had to dismantle this alliance to weaken the Borana Oromo and deny the OLF a favorable ground to operate and escalate armed insurgency. The Oromo people and elites elsewhere need to know all these important alliance for the Oromo resistance struggle and fight for freedom to succeed in defeating tyranny and remove the evil empire of TPLF.

The Konso are very loving and friendly people. One can see this in their popular expressions such as “ Motta Nayyoo”, phrases they use when referring to someone they want to befriend “ My mother’s son”. I grew up with the Konso people and in fact some of my best friends as a child were ethnically Konso, but from Afaan Oromo speaking and bilingual parents. The major trading partners of the Konso people remain to be the Borana in Taltalle. I was devastated by the news of the conflicts between the Konso and Borana instigated by TPLF. It happened while I was away from that country, living a life of exile here in the US. I have played a little part in controlling the damage and restoring peace. It is my sincere hope that during this time of intensified popular uprising against the authoritarian rule of TPLF regime, we as the Oromo do everything possible to prevent the TPLF from instigating such conflicts to weaken the struggle of the Konso people and that of the Oromo people. I would said the best days in the Oromo-Konso friendship will come soon as soon as all the people in the region get their much desired freedom from subjugation and suppression.

Ethiopian students demand end to police crackdowns in rare protest

Dozens of university students protested in Ethiopia’s capital on Tuesday, demanding an end to police crackdowns that followed months of demonstrations over plans to requisition farmland in the country’s Oromiya region late last year.

The government wanted to develop farmland around the capital, Addis Ababa, and its plan triggered some of the worst civil unrest for a decade, with rights groups and U.S.-based dissidents saying as many as 200 people may have been killed.

Officials suggest the figure is far lower but have not given a specific number.

Ethiopia has long been one of the world’s poorest nations but has industrialized rapidly in the past decade and now boasts double-digit growth. However, reallocating land is a thorny issue for Ethiopians, many of whom are subsistence farmers.

Authorities scrapped the land scheme in January, but sporadic demonstrations persist and, on Tuesday, students from Addis Ababa University marched in two groups toward the embassy of the United States, a major donor, holding signs that read “We are not terrorists. Stop killing Oromo people.”

Such protests are rare in a country where police are feared as heavy-handed and the government is seen as repressive.

A government spokesman did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn has promised to address grievances in the Oromiya region and says he blames rebel groups for stoking violence.

Opponents blame harsh police tactics.

“The aim was to highlight the abuses carried out in the region,” one student told Reuters, saying he did not want to be identified for fear of reprisals.

“We waved white cloth to indicate that we were peaceful protesters. But police started beating us up,” he said.

New York-based Human Rights Watch said last month that protesters it spoke to and who had been detained after the outbreak of demonstrations in November had been subjected to severe beatings and never appeared before a judge.

The group said women suffered sexual assaults and mistreatment. It said one 18-year-old student was “given electric shocks to his feet”.

Officials dismissed the report as not worthy of comment.

Two Names Solution For the Conflict Between Pro-Ethiopia and Pro-Oromia Nationals!

The ongoing #OromoProtest for the last four months clearly showed us the exisitng very deep mistrust between the Ethiopian lovers and the Oromian promoters. Oromians are paying huge sacrifice of their life, while pro-Ethiopia opposition groups are endlessly discussing about the motive of the movement and who are behind it, instead of joining the protest and galvanizing the freedom struggle. The main fear of the Ethiopianists seem to be about the possible civil war between the Oromo and others as well as about the eventual disintegration of the empire. Even the pro-Ethiopia rhetoric of the unionist Oromo in the ODF and OFC couldn’t help in convincing the other Ethiopianists about the union politics of the Oromo people, which is already labelled as “separatist movement” by the Abyssinian elites. Because of this mistrust, an inclusive and efficient revolution against the fascist and racist TPLF couldn’t yet erupt. Even there was a senseless arguement whether to call it Oromo protest or Ethiopia protest. In this arguement, there is a reflectioin of a conflict between two ‘citizen identities’: Ethiopiawinet (Ethiopian) vs  Oromiawinet (Oromian). The million dollar question not yet answered is: how can the pro-Ethiopia elites and the pro-Oromia forces trust each other and protest in unison against the fascist regime?
It is a known fact that the Oromo are the only people with dual history in the state formation of the country and because of that having dual visions for its transformation. The Oromo were both in conquered and conqueror sides of the war in nation building. Now, among the Oromo community, some identify themselves with the conquered side and fight for liberation of Gadaa Oromia or change of Ethiopia to Great Oromia; the others see themselves as parts of the conqueror and struggle for the transformation of Ethiopia to democratic country. The first group are pro-Oromia, while the second are pro-Ethiopia. Now, the two blocs have a sort of conflict and sometimes they even see each other as enemies with irreconcilable conflict. I think we can have a synthetic common vision as compromise solution for the conflict; i.e use of two names (Ethiopia and Oromia) interchangeably for the same country, just as we are calling our capital Addisaba and Finfinne simultaneously.
Just as their Addisaba is our Finfinne, their Ethiopia is our Oromia. Because of the fact that the name Ethiopia is contaminated by the meaning given from the Greeks (burnt-face, which is almost the same to the N-word used against blacks) and by the content given from the Habesha (making Ethiopia equivalent to Abyssinian empire’s system of domination, excluding as well as exploiting the Oromo and the other nations), this additional name now or the possible change of the name in the future is mandatory, if we really want to live together. That is why I once asked the Habesha elites: why not you accept the name Oromia, rather than asking the Oromo to join you in loving Ethiopia? Surprisingly, the Abyssinian elites who tried to exclude the Oromo from the Ethiopian ‘citizen identity’ are now doing everything under the sun in order to persuade us to accept this same identity.
Simply put, I want to tell those who do have a similar attitude that the future of the empire will be either to be transformed in to a genuine union/true federation as the ODF planned, the union which can be given the name Oromia if the Ethiopianists agree or to just face the inevitable emergence of the Gadaa Oromia in a form of an independent republic as the OLF is trying to achieve. Both the Abyssinians and the Oromians know very well that Gadaa Oromia, being occupied by Abyssinia and kept within Ethiopia, will not last as long as they want. That is why we need to come to our senses and try to find a solution, in which we all do have a win-win compromise. Manipulating histories and legends is not what we have to do now. Important is a future-oriented creative thinking, which can benefit all the nations in the empire.
Above all, nowadays narrow the Ethiopianists define Ethiopiawinet (‘citizen identity’) as anti Oromia and use it as an instrument to antagonize Oromo nationalism. They know that Oromumma is now necessary to mobilize the Oromo for freedom struggle and they want to hinder this. To tackle such move of the exclusive Ethiopianists, the Oromo unionists with inclusive politics like the elites in the ODF and OFC better name the whole country Oromia, instead of Ethiopia, so that the Oromo not necessarily should accept the imposed ‘citizen identity’, but enjoy Oromiawinet as our second identiy; the first being Oromonet (Oromummaa = Oromoness). That is why Dawite Mekonnen sang about Oromiawinet (‘citizen identity’) and Abdi Nuressa did it regarding Oromonet (ethnic identity). Here are some reasons why that country should also be named Oromia:
– the Tigrai elites reduced both Oromia and the Oromo almost to half, just as planned by their leader Meles Zenawi to change the majority Oromo to minority, so it is better to reclaim the whole country than accepting the presently less than half Oromia ruled by the OPDO, which is determined by the anti-Oromo elites.
– Oromo is Cush and Cush is Oromo, implying that the other Cushitic nations (including the Amhara and Tigrai nations, who denied their Cushitic base) in the country are the offshots or progenies of the Oromo, so that they can be part and parcel of Oromia.
– according to some scholars, the whole country belongs to the Oromo and all the hitherto kings and leaders were Oromo, the Amhara being only soldiers of the governments.
– the brain and heart of the whole country (Finfinne) is the very center of the Oromo nation, so that any country governed or ruled from that center can be called Oromia.
– the Oromo is a single majority (about 60%) and the Oromo region covers more than 60% of the whole country.
– all economical, specially export, base of the whole country (coffee, gold, hide & skin, flower, caat…etc) are from the Oromo region.
– most of the arbenyoch (heros and heroins), who did build and kept the country as it is now, are Oromo and most of the athlets, who contributed for the fame of the country, are also Oromo.
– even the whole Gojjam and part of Gondar and Tigrai were Oromo and belongs to Oromia.
– the original Cushitic language in Meroe was highly related to Afaan Oromo and the other Cushitic languages are branched from it.
– Waaqeffannaa, the indigeneous religion of the Cushites, which was also Abraham’s own religion before the emergence of Judaism, Christianity and Islam, is still preserved among the Oromo people and it needs to be revived as unique religion of the country.
– the holy TREE (as mentioned in the Bible), under which the pre-Judaism religious peoples on earth sacrifised to their Waaqa, is still revered in the Oromo society.
– the known verse in the Holy book “Oromia stretches his hand to Waaqa” is named as Cush by the Jew and as Ethiopia by Greeks.
– Abraham Ashine of the Akkasum (Axum), who was Cushite is said to be more with Oromo charachters and told to have Oromo fighters during his invasion of Asia.
– the Oromo are told to be the indigeneous people on which the others are grafted.
– the study of Egypt showed more Afaan Oromo charachter than Amharic in relation with old Egypt inscriptions.
– the present country is built at cost of the Oromo, actually with life and limb of the Oromo people as well as with Oromo property.
– Oromo People are demographical majority to which all other peoples are highly related and Oromo region is a geographical center in which all peoples of the country enjoy life in harmony.
– the Oromo died for building and keeping the whole country and deserves to claim the naming as Oromia and their own region can be designated as Oromo region.
– ….. etc!
Some arguemnets against naming the country as Oromia are: name of one Ethnie can not be used for the whole multi-national country; it is imposing Oromo identity on others; it is neglecting the identity of other nations; it is just expansion of the Oromo territory; it shows Oromo chauvinism;…etc. But none of the arguements is correct. If we really want to have a union of free peoples, which can never happen if Gadaa Oromia will be Independent, it is necessary to call the future union as Oromia. All nations will have their freedom and autonomy within such a union called Oromia. Designating countries after the name of their biggest Ethnie is not new. E.g the name India is from the name of Hindi people, Russia from Russki and Spain from Spaniard.
Thus, I want to suggest all Oromo nationals to call the whole country Oromia, instead of Ethiopia just as we named Finfinne, instead of Addisaba. The others can further call it Ethiopia. For now we can follow this two names principle until we decide for one of them or otherwise in the future. To avoid any confusion, the present Oromia ruled by the OPDO can be called Oromo region, not Oromia. Oromia consists of the existing Oromo, Amhara, Tigari, Southern, Ogaden, Afar, Benishangul, Gambella & Harari regions. Countries having two names is not some thing new; for instance, Holland/Nietherland, Great Britain/United Kingdom, Germany/Deutschland & Egypt/Misir…etc. The Oromo people can call the whole country Oromia and tolerate the name Ethiopia, becuase of the fact that the positive image of Ethiopia is mainly due to Oromo’s contribution and due to its relation with ancient Cush civilization, to which the Oromo nation is the main part.

This Upper Nile country called ‘Oromia’ by the native owners of the land is used to be named as ‘Abyssinia’ by the Portuguese; ‘Kush’ by the Jews; ‘Alhabesh’ by the Arabs; ‘Punt’ by the Egyptians; and ‘Ethiopia’ by the Greeks.
To help the two anti-TPLF camps (the pro-Ethiopia and pro-Oromia elites) to trust each other and cooperate in struggle, it is necessary that they agree on forging a union of free peoples after freedom from the existing apartheid system of the TPLF. The conflict in the ‘citizen identity’ can be solved by applying the above suggested two names solution. In that case, the Oromo should not necessarily accept Ethiopia and Ethiopiawinet as well as the non-Oromo peoples must not identify themselves with Oromia and Oromiawinet. We can use both Ethiopia and Oromia interchangeably to name our future common home (union of free peoples). If it is necessary to choose from one of the two names or to give another name, that can be decided by the peoples in the country or by their representatives in the future democratically eleced parliament. Now, the Oromo better sing about only Oromia, Oromiawinet and Oromonet without confusing our youth with the rhetoric of Ethiopia and Ethiopiawinet, which are already rejected by some members of our society because of the misuse of Ethiopiawinet by the Habesha elites. Thus, I again suggest that our unionists in the ODF and OFC call the whole country Oromia, instead of Ethiopia. The multi-national federation they want to foster after freedom can contain self rule of Oromo region within shared rule of Oromia.

Then, the editor of the website asked a legitimate question: “The Oromo National Liberation Movement in a Self-Imposed Gridlock; How Can the Oromo Movement Unlock This Gridlock?” At the same time, the website showed us a very descriptive picture of a traffic jam as an illustration for the gridlock. What a challenging question from Gadaa.com and what a confusing article from the author! I personally took time to respond to the two and wrote since then my opinions on the subject repeatedly. The endless discussion on the same topic is still going on and we are not yet free from labeling each other as “enemy” just for choosing one alternative solution to the other. Thus, we republish the
same opinion again and again for the problem is not yet resolved. It is like prescribing the same medication sgain and again for certain chronic disease. I now try here to summarize my idea in short and show what the common goal can be for the different Oromo ideological factions. To the Article

I read the article mentioned above and could comprehend that the “thesis” of Oromo struggle was presented as “only an independent Oromo state” to be the original objective. This thesis is in contrast to my hitherto opinions regarding the Oromo’s goal; i.e ‘Oromian union of free nations’, which I do consider as the current synthesis of the Oromo liberation movement. It is not bad that the article stressed the necessity of forging an independent democratic republic of Oromo state. Actually OLF’s aim was from the very beginning an inclusive ‘independence and union’ unlike TPLF’s objective of ‘federation or separation’. This goal of the OLF can be summarized as ‘a union of free nations’, which is almost the same to ‘multinational union’ or ‘self-rule and shared-rule’. OLF’s approach is optimal to the majority nation at the center of the state (to the Oromo nation), whereas that of the TPLF is good for the minority
nation at the periphery.

Actually such minority nations at the periphery are the ones, who need to excercise their right to slef-determination in order to either federate with or separate from the Oromo regional state. For the Oromo nation, freedom is automatically the same to independence, because it simply means a directly taking over of the centeral government; unlike the liberation of Eritrea or the eventual future separation of Tigrai. What the Oromo liberators need to do after occupation of Tulluu Daalatti palace should be just change the name Ethiopia to Oromia, if necessary. Even if we continue calling the union as Ethiopia, it will be de facto Oromia, as long as freedom and democracy are rule of the game and Afaan Oromo will be a working language of the union. Then, the Oromo of Finfinne are the nation who will give right to self-determination including and up to independence for these minority nations at the periphery; that means the Oromo will not be the one who are
going to demand this right from Bahirdar of Amhara or from Maqale of Tigrai.

The problem I see in assertion of the article is that the author thinks with “parallel framework” on the contrary to my “series framework” thinking. Parallel and series here are the metaphors based on the two kinds of electrical circuits (parallel and series circuits). He is a classical example of those who have the hitherto “parallel way” of thinking regarding the arrangement of the three terms of the Oromo’s objective (autonomy, independence & union), the way of thinking which is applied by many members of Oromo polity, including those who produce conflicts where there is actually no conflict. That is why the author ends up accusing and blaming Oromo nationalists, who do emphasize the other two terms of the Oromo goal different from the independence term. According to his “parallel framework,” the following three terms of one Oromo objective are in an irreconcilable conflict, because he and his likes think that the three terms lead us
from the status quo to three different directions:

– plan to forge the true Oromo state’s autonomy in a federated democratic Oromia; that means regional state being dominated by a multinational federal government,

– original objective to establish an independent Gadaa republic of Oromo state, i.e Oromo state free from any non-Oromo centeral government,

– vision to achieve self-determination of the Oromo people with final objective of fostering ‘Oromian union of free nations’: be it in a form of smaller Oromia (excluding Abyssinia), in a form of the existing current Oromia, i.e. including all free nations in the country, or in a form of greater Oromia, including even the neighboring nations in the Horn such as Eritrea, Djibouti and Somalia.

If we think in “parallel framework” like the author, we just end up thinking as if these three terms of the objective are exclusive to each other so that the conflict between the groups fighting for these terms of the objective, respectively, is already programmed. Nowadays, there are two groups of people in Oromia, who do want to convince and influence us to think in this “parallel framework.” Some do it unknowingly, like the author seems to be, and the others act intentionally to exploit this “conflicting situation” in order to sow a discord among the three groups of Oromo nationalists. Especially, it is good to know Woyane cadres’ loving this frame of thinking for they grasp how effective it is to divide Oromo nationalists.

I believe that the antithesis to the nonconstructive frame of thinking revealed in the article is my “series framework.” According to mine, the above three terms of the objective are not contradictory, but complementary, to each other. Even though unitarist Oromians’ objective does not include the right of Oromo region to exist as an independent country at all, the merits like justice, democracy and freedom, for which members of unitarist Oromian parties do struggle, are not against our national liberation movement. It seems that is why the parties, in which most of the unitarist Oromians are organized, are now tolerated by many Oromo nationals. Coming to the three important goals, which the author tries to present as if they are the thesis, anti-thesis and the synthesis to each other, they are which I put in a series circuit for they are three terms of one Oromo’s objective and need to be achieved one after another. I think autonomy is our
short-term goal, independence being middle term and union to be considered as the long-term aim. I believe all these three terms of one Oromo objective should be supported by most of Oromians.

To the Poll

Gadaa.com’s poll project in relation to the article seemed to be misleading. The question raised was, “What is the Oromo Cause for You?” and, of course, asking that is not bad. Nevertheless, the alternative answers given there as listed below are not actually exclusive options, among which we should choose. They are complementary options, which we can have at different situations and which we do support at different steps of our liberation journey. The alternatives given as the answer in the poll were:

– liberating Oromo region and form an ‘Oromian union of free nations’.

– liberating Oromo region in the form of an independent sovereign country (republic of Oromo state).

– establishing the self-rule of Oromo state in a democratically federated whole Oromia with strong multinational centeral government.

– winning the class struggle first and foremost, and last.

Gadaa.com would have asked better, for instance, if the question were like: “What Should Be the Final Objective” of the Oromo people for you? Then, we can know how many people really want to have as their final goal “only winning class struggle,” or “only self-rule of Oromo region” or “only republic of Oromo state,” instead of pushing step by step towards “union of free nations in Oromia,” which surely will be the end-goal of all citizens and he nations in this globalized world, where we do see even the whole of Africa trying to come together to forge an African federation.

According to the article and according to the diagram added from Gadaa.com, the thesis of the Oromo national liberation movement is independence, the antithesis is autonomy (federation) and the synthesis is self-determination (referendum). But, we could ask: where is the contradiction among these three concepts? The Oromo national liberation movement is a striving for self-determination to decide on our own future destiny. All nations can together fight to achieve national liberty and be in a position to exercise their right for referendum, after which we can vote on the issue: ‘free Oromo state within Oromian union’ vs ‘free Oromo state without Oromian union’ (this union being either that of only oppressed nations excluding Abyssinia, or inclusive of the only nations in the present Oromian geography, or including all nations in the Horn of Africa). Autonomy can be a mid-goal leading us to an independence; why do then the author and his likes try
to create a conflict among Oromo nationalists, where actually there is no viable conflict?

According to the result of the poll in Gadaa.com, the objective of “only winning class struggle” is not the option for the Oromo people and the aim of “only self-rule in a federation” seems to be a transitional solution, but can not be a preferred part of the referendum. The “referendum” would be expected between the two concepts: the goal of “free Oromo state without a necessary union” and “free Oromo state within Oromian union of nations.” It seemed to be a nice referendum, but is now good timing to argue on this two possible final goals? Is such untimely quarrel not what our enemies want, instead of fighting together against our enemy for our common national liberty, first to come to the position of making referendum, then to leave the decision for the stakeholder nations and try to live according to the result of the public verdict? Actually the Oromo just need to take over power in Tulluu Daalatti and the other nations have to go
for referendum and decide on the alternatives of living in union with the Oromo or choose their own independence from Oromo state. I personally do accept and respect the position of the author to pursue and realize the “Gadaa republic of Oromo state without any possible union”. But Oromian unionists do have also God-given right to advocate for a “free Oromo state within Oromian union of free nations.” To see which of the two would be our final destination, let’s leave the decision for the public at large of all concerned nations.

To the Synthesis

The very interesting message from the diagram of Gadaa.com is an attempt to show that Ethiopian nationalism = Oromian nationalism in the “synthesis” part of the diagram. Was this right/wrong? Or was it conditional? For Oromo nationalists, who are fighting for the “only isolated independence of Oromo region,” it is principally wrong. For those who do have autonomy as their final goal, it is absolutely right. For the Oromian unionists, I am sure it is only conditionally false/right; it can be right, if the unitarists can accept and respect Oromo nationalism and the union will be named as Oromia. After all, Oromo nationalism is a national issue, whereas Oromian nationalism is a regional issue. If it is in this sense of the unionists, then Oromian nationalism is not in contradiction with Ethiopian nationalism. We need to differentiate the Ethiopian nationalism according to the unitarist Habesha elites from this form of Oromian unionists’ version of
Ethiopian nationalism = Oromian nationalism. In this case, future citizens of the country will be Oromians; i.e Ethiopian Nationalism (thesis) + Oromo Nationalism (anti-thesis) = Oromian Nationalism (synthesis).

Another illustration was an attempt to show as if the democratization of Oromia = liberation of Oromo region. Is this possible? It is possible only if we take democratization of Oromia as a means to the liberation of Oromo region. Whether this means will be effective to lead us to the required end or not is another question. We can raise similar question regarding armed struggle, whether it is more effective than the democratization (non-violent) way to come to our goal. Otherwise, democratization of Oromia as a goal, disregarding liberation of Oromo region, the same view to that of the unitarist Oromians is not what Oromo nationalists should accept. Oromian unionists look at democratization of Oromia as a possible good tool to help us move to our objective. Furthermore, it is really good to differentiate and try to understand the position of the unitatrist Oromians, federalist Oromians, pro-independence Oromians and that of unionist Oromians. But for
God’s sake, where is the contradiction and why should there be an animosity among them, as far as they accept and respect the future public verdict of the Oromo people at large, when we get a chance to vote on their different options or on their different goals? The question we need to answer is, how should we approach and manage the parties? Here is my suggestion, taking the present Oromian political spectrum into consideration; let’s:

– cooperate with, but always check the unitarists as long as they fight against the existing sytem of domination.

– fight unconditionally against the hegemonist TPLF in unison.

– accept and support the federalists to move one step forward in our liberation journey; we know that Oromo nationalists did opt to take this term of the objective as their own goal based on the current objective reality in Oromia.

– respect and take the objective of the pro-independence fronts as a core-objective to move two steps forward.

– look at the unionists as farsighted, who are ready to move beyond only achieving national Oromo state’s independence up to a regional Oromian union of free nations for a common benefit.

I do hope that we will come slowly, but surely, to the position of clarity as far as the Oromo’s cause, aim or question is concerned. The metaphor I brought here, putting the different terms of Oromo’s objective in a form of either “parallel circuit” or “series circuit” can make immense difference in our way of thinking and may make big effect on our contribution to the Oromo national liberation movement. Putting the three terms of the goal (autonomy, independence and union) in a “parallel circuit” makes the three terms of the objective to be seen as if they are very contradictory destinations from which we must choose one. Arranging them in a “series circuit” as if we can achieve them one after another (first achieve the autonomy, then an independence and then further a union), makes it clear, so we can see that there is no conflict among the three terms of the only one objective. I hope in due time, all of the concerned Oromo
nationalists will start to think in this form of “series framework” instead of thinking in “parallel framework”. For further clarity, I would like to put my own version of thesis, antithesis and synthesis of the hitherto effective political concepts as follows:

– thesis (original objective): unconditional and exclusive independent republic of Oromo state

– antithesis: unconditional and only unitary Oromia (unitarist Oromians’ position)

– synthesis: Oromo’s objective with its three terms (short-term is autonomy, middle-term being independence, and long-term can be a union of free nations)

Now, it will be the good time for all Oromo nationalists to agree on accepting the above mentioned synthesis part of our national liberation movement as our common ground, rather than opting to the possibility of rallying only behind the original objective and to continuously confuse the Oromo mass. Otherwise, the poll in Gadaa.com is designed based on thinking with “parallel framework” so that we are obliged to choose between the autonomy, independence and the union of free nations as the only Oromo cause. Actually, most of the Oromo nationalists seem to support all the three terms of the objective as our short-term, middle-term and long-term goals, respectively, when we do think in a “series framework.” It is not bad to observe in the poll that the majority of the voters concentrated on and voted for the “independent republic of Oromo state” as a preferable Oromo cause, which I also do think is the core and the very secure form of our
sovereignty. We know that autonomy is only the temporary solution and, of course, a union of free nations will happen only after the securing of our independence, when we give our verdict based on our free will to achieve a better benefit in the future, that is why such a union is a long-term project. The only bad thing is, when we start to look at these three terms of our objective as if they are contradictory to each other, which is actually the way of thinking we do observe in the article mentioned. Otherwise, it is good to know and to keep in mind that nowadays there are four groups of Oromo politicians:

– unitarist Oromians, who do still support the project of one Oromia, disregarding the existence of an autonomous Oromo region as a country.

– federailst Oromians, who do have an autonomous Oromo region in a federal democratic Oromia with strong multinational centeral government as their goal of struggle.

– pro-independence Oromians, who do struggle for the core-objective, an independent republic of Oromo state, as their final goal.

– unionist Oromians, who do struggle for a union of free nations in the region as their lasting goal.

Here come the two questions yet to be answered: are there really many Oromo, who want to limit the only one Oromo’s objective to the “only unitary Oromia”, to the “only federal Oromia” or to the “only independent Oromo state”? Are really the above mentioned unitarist Oromos, federalist Oromos and liberator Oromos against the noble cause of the unionists? Last but not least, the picture of the cars in gridlock (the Oromo national liberation movement in a self-imposed gridlock) shown on the front page of Gadaa.com was very wonderful picture. It described well the chaotic situation of our real and current political movement. It helped me feel and be really surprised by thinking how passive we are at least not to discuss the issue intensively and get out of the gridlock. May Waaqa help us at least to talk and write, even if we do lack a sort of stamina to act and behave in promoting the Oromo liberation movement. Finally, I would like to say
that Oromo’s objective is, in short: only one goal with three terms, i.e a short-term to achieve autonomy — a mid-term to forge independence (the core-objective) — and a long-term to foster a union of free nations. Autonomy is only the mid-goal to the core-objective; union is the post-core-objective arrangement for the sake of a possible mutual benefit, based on the future free will of nations. A big nation like the Oromo can only benefit from such a union. We need to have no illusion and no confusion on the only one Oromo’s objective with three terms to be realized one after another. In short, the synthesis of the different goals among our nationals is ‘Oromian union of free nations’, which can be boldly told to both internal Oromian community and international community. I believe, hope and love to see that we will be out of the self-imposed-gridlock in such new approach. May Waaqa bless and help us!

The TPLF Agazi Army is an Ethiopian Interahamwe

In Rwanda “up to seventeen thousandInterahmwe members had apparently been trained to act as an extermination squad against civilians. (An Ordinary Man by Paul Rusesabagina, p.75)

As Mr. Rusesabaginaput it “Interahamwe means either ‘those who stand together’ or ‘those who attack together’ depending on who is doing the translation.” (Ibid, p.67)

In Ethiopia we started witnessing the Agazi members were trained to perform the same extermination of civilians. Starting from 2005 election until this moment they are busy doing the same extermination duty on all non-Tigre civilians mainly on Oromo.

“…. The Hutu slowly assumed power as the ruling class. One administrator in Kigali issued the following secret order: ‘I deem it necessary to rapidly put into place a local military force officially composed of 14 percent Tutsi and 86 percent Hutu but in effect and for practical purposes,100 percent Hutu’. Fearful of losing their longstanding grip on power-and perhaps also fearful of retributive violence……” (Ibid, p.25)

The case looks similar in Ethiopia, specially, in military commander positions and Agazi killing squad where the Tigrians take 98 percent of the share. In Rwanda the Hutus are 86 percent of the population where in Ethiopia the ruling elite and the military commanders and majority of the military rank and file is from Tigray that constitutes 6 percent of the country’s population. This minority syndrome makes the people in power to panic whenever the people/or an individual tries to peacefully demand anything simple. That is why in the last twenty-four years all issues were being answered with bullets rather than round table discussions or peaceful dialogue.

Mr. Rusesabagina further elaborated what happened in Rwanda “I tried not to listen to RTLM in those first hours, but it could not be avoided. Given the choice between listening to filth and missing potentially crucial information, I will choose the filth every single time.”

“But it was even worse than I could have imagined. The radio was instructing all its listeners to murder their neighbors.”

“Do your work,” I heard the announcers say. “Clean your neighborhood of brush. Cut the tall trees.”

”I would hear variations on these phrases echoing countless times over the next three months. The “tall trees” was an unmistakable reference to Tutsis. “Clean your neighborhood of brush” meant that rebel army sympathizers might be hiding among Tutsi families and so the entire family should be “cleaned” to be on the safe side. But somehow the worst phrase of all to me was “Do your work.” It made killing sound like a responsibility. Like it was the normal thing to do.”

“Here at least were the bones under the skin. All the anti-Tutsi rhetoric put out on the air over the previous six months had blossomed into what they were now actually saying out loud: Kill your neighbors. Murder your friends. Do not leave the graves half full. Fantasy had become reality. …..” (Ibid; p. 82)

Today we are listening the same rhetoric from the Ethiopian government authorities. Advisor to the “P/Minister”, Abay Tsehaye intimidated OPDO cadres by officially declaring to them “we will straighten out those who oppose the implementation of the master plan.”  The so called prime minister went on government owned medias repeatedly and bragged to take merciless action. The so called communication minister called the Oromo people Demons, witches, gangsters, and terrorists. The stooge members of the parliament also called on the government to take appropriate action. Leaders of the Ethiopian Orthodox church officially released statement supporting the genocide committed by the government and clearly stated to stand by the government. Government owned, and government affiliated so called independent medias like Zami radio also fanning war rhetoric on Oromo people in general. The above mentioned all are declaring genocide in different languages and the action is already on the ground. While the government authorities and their lackeys are beating genocide drum the fascist Agazi killing squad is murdering hundreds, imprisoning and torturing thousands and transporting thousands of prisoners to their home land Tigray to commit heinous crimes like hidden mass murder (genocide), and brutal torture.

Borrowing Mr. Rusesabagina’s words, “this was the clearest signal yet that the world was preparing to close its eyes, close its ears, and turn its back on what was happening.” (Ibid; p. 98)

This repeats itself in what is happening in Oromia today by Tigre killing squad. We again witness the world do not want to react to stop this genocide but also give economic and diplomatic support to further the genocide.

Mr. Rusesabagina says “…. Genocide finding could commit (the US government) to actually do something.  So the pressure was on. There had to be a way to call what was happing by something other than its rightful name.” (Ibid; p. 135)

This author continued. “The peculiar avoidance of the word genocide was for reason.” (Ibid; p.136)

“……. UN member states signed a treaty in 1948 threatening criminal penalties for leaders of any regime found to have conducted an extermination campaign against a particular religious or racial group. But the United States dragged its feet, fearing the encroachment of a world government telling it how to act. It was not until 1986 that the U.S. Senate finally ratified the agreement. By then genocides had been carried out in Cambodia, in Nigeria, In Pakistan, in Burundi, and in many other places on the globe.”

“But this is characteristic. As Harvard University scholar Samantha Power has pointed out, the world’s foremost superpower, America, has almost never acted to stop a race of people from being exterminated, even when confronted with overwhelming evidence.”

“The reason for the US silence as the author put it is “If US officials actually spoke the word out loud they might have been morally and legally compelled to act under the terms of the 1948 treaty.”

The author further said “……Even though our situation was radically different in origin and nature, anything that called for a commitment of American troops to Africa was anathema in the hall of the U.S. State Department. And, of course there was no natural resource in Rwanda that anybody cared about either-only human beings in danger.” (Ibid; p.137-138).

The same is true for Oromi’a, where most world media outlets reported limited informationand is still reporting what has happened since the peaceful protest started in Oromia and all human right advocates disclose the death toll every now and then for the last one month, and some of them asked for the international interference to stop the genocide, no body dare to call the act in its rightful name.

Finally, I quote the author “Look closely at each of the world’s recent genocides, however, and the surface differences burn away. The core of genocide is always the same. They erupt under the cover of a war. They are the brainchildren of insecure leaders eager for more power. Governments ease their people into them gradually. Other nations must be persuaded to look away. And all genocides rely heavily on the power of group thinking to embolden the everyday killers.”

All these quotations are self-explanatory for the events taking place in Ethiopia in general and in Oromia in particular today. The insecure Tigray ethnic based minority fascist TPLF blood thirsty killers answer all people’s legitimate and peaceful demands with bullets-killing from 8-year young school children to 80-year elderly citizens. Even though the people halt its demonstration for at least a week they continued their genocide, mass arrest and barbaric torture. The act of Agazi eliminators raiding peaceful Ambo university students last Saturday (12/26/2015) to torture male students and rape female students is a fresh example.

On the other side the advocates of democracy the western world looks turning their eyes, closing their ears from this barbaric act of genocide.  All things pass away. The Oromo people will take its freedom with its own struggle. But history never let your avoidance pass unregistered. This registered history never dies. It will judge us all in the future and give us our proper place.

Somebody who owns a pet is obliged to discipline his/her pet

Puppet group leader of the TPLF serving few, ignoring majority

The leaders of Western Countries have many pets in Africa, which are assumed to lead different African States. Out of all these pets the most favored by these pet masters is the one who call itself “Ethiopian government” (a bunch of Tigray bandit’s thugs). Why I call these stooges/puppets/ a pet is, they were not elected by their countries’ peoples, but they came to power by the sponsorship or approval of these Western countries’ leaders, to bark and bite peoples whenever they are ordered to do so.  A disciplined pet never bark or bite anybody. But these pets bark and bite people (intimidate, arrest, torture, kill, kidnap, rape, keep in unknown detention centers, etc.,) that dies of hanger and destitution due to their robbery (corruption), bad governance, oppression, suppression and harassment, day and night to serve the interest of these Western masters.

These western masters are confortable in this world order, which put all African peoples and peoples elsewhere that lead a life of misery under the grip of dictators and fascists sponsored and supported by them, as far as these dictators and fascists are faithful to them. This was clearly proved by Mr. Obama:

  1. In 2014 when he summoned the so called African heads of states with the exclusion of Mr. Mugabe of Zimbabuwe, MR. Albeshir of Sudan and Mr. Isyiyas Afewerki of Eritrea. These three dictators are left aside not because of their tyranny, but because they refused to be a pet for the western countries. From those summoned the big majority are most corrupted dictators and killers that stayed in power more than thirty years with the exception of few who are relatively democrat and transparent.
  2. The trip Mr. Obama made last summer to Addis Ababa to meet with these despots for the second time in the so called AU heads of states meeting proves that he joined their club approved, encouraged and sponsored their tyranny. The most despairing thing is the recognition he gave to the Ethiopian last May parliamentary election declared by TPLF as won by 100% vote that was known by the Ethiopian people the other way round 100% rigged election. Very disgracing is the way he and his accompanying staffs act when they met with the corrupted, fascists and killers authorities of Ethiopia in their blood bathed palace. He exposed his government’s hypocrisy preaching about democracy while dinning, drinking and dancing with dictators and fascists that humiliated the American public and disappointed all advocates of human rights and democracy all over the world.

We want to take you back in history. “In 2008 the whole world applauded the United States for electing its first African American president. No part of the world was happier than the continent of Africa with its 54 nations. After all, this president was half Caucasian and half Kenyan. He was a direct child of Africa not just a descendent”. (From an article written by Mr. Harry C. Alford on African American Voice newspaper Aug.2014, p.8) Yes, this expression is 100% correct. But why the world applauded like that? Was it because they like African Americans or Africans? NO! The actual fact was not that. It was not because the world liked or disliked African Americans or Africans, or the world sympathized or preferred this race of mankind more than the other races. That was not the point for the world to be so happy. The reason simply was the world long ago got tired of American imperialism, double-standard and hypocritical stand they have on the value of democracy in different countries and their intrusive action of worldwide plunging into sovereign states’ affairs unreservedly and expected this African American president would stop that unlawful act and establish a friendly and just atmosphere based on mutual and equitable coexistence on this planet earth.

African peoples were the happiest of all when Obama was elected to lead this great country. Because they expected Obama, a son of African father was aware of the miserable situation they were in and help them to go out of this all round misery using American capacity of diplomatic influence. Here we have to divide Africans into two categories, the happiest and the saddest at that time. The peoples of Africa were the happiest and the African rotten dictators were the saddest of all, even sadder than the Republican Party and Senator McCain who lost the election.  These African dictators, tyrants, killers and fascists were very sad and scared to death because if Obama keeps his vow and works hard to bring democracy to Africa they knew that they would perish from the face of the earth. So they were panicking until they understood Obama was simply vowed for election purpose, and not from the bottom of his heart

Why peoples of Africa were the happiest of all, simply because, Obama is a son of African father?  No they had a greater expectation from this president. They expected he would extend American democracy to his father’s home land Africa. They had a great expectation that he would save them from the harassment, extrajudicial killings, arbitrary arrests, fascistic tortures, uncontrolled corruption and plunder of national resources etc., committed by the self-appointed tyrants, and rotten dictators and fascists that rule African states. The people of Africa considered him as their Messiah and Savior sent by God to save them from the cruel jaws of these killers of the 21 century.

Was that expectation fulfilled? We have seen the opposite after Obama is 7 years in office. Actually African peoples lost that hope within the first two years of Obama’s presidency, when they observed that he rub shoulder to shoulder with dictators like the late Meles Zenawi of Ethiopia. They lost hope when uncontrolled billions of Dollars given by the name of aid to be used in poverty mitigation, instead of serving the purpose it was allocated to, were put into the pockets of these dictators to satisfy their lust for corruption, used to buy bullets to kill them and ignored. Today the African people clearly understood that Mr. Obama is the master of these killers.

This shows Mr. Obama clearly professed that he abandoned the African people who greatly hopped he works towards the democratization of Africa and took side with the killers (the pets he assigned to bark and bite the people who ask democratic governance).

Recently the news of British Prime Minister Mr. David Cameron visits Ethiopia is circulating in a social media. I don’t understand why Mr. Cameron chooses this particular time to be seen with these resist, fascist, genocidal tyrant bunch of bandits that are going down the slope of history so fast. At present Ethiopia’s ruling tyrants are churned (wagged) by the popular uprising of the Oromo people, transport workers, the Amhara people of Gonder, the Gambella people, the Ogaden people, the Sidama people, the Binshangul prople, the Surma people and etc., which comprises more than 75% of the Ethiopian people.

Therefore, the question comes to every body’s mind, “is Mr. Cameron’s visit to Ethiopia to strengthen the already dis-integrated bunch of killers (western pets) or to discipline them to the standard of international laws and values and advise them to peacefully resign to avert any further bloodshed in that country?” we leave the choice to Mr. Cameron.

Mr. Cameron should read history of the formation of that country. History written by certain individuals of British citizens clearly states that the Oromo and the Southern peoples of that country were mowed down in millions by ammunition and military advisors given to Habasha kings by the British Empire rulers starting from the first half of the ninth century. These people have the right to ask blood money that compensates those atrocities if this world is a just world.

If Mr. Cameron visits Ethiopia to repeat his fore-fathers deeds he is mistaken. The Oromo of today is not the Oromo of 19th century that had no central leadership and modern weapons. Today Oromo youth is determined to fight the brutal enemy either they are backed by the Western neo-liberals or not. Therefore the same old tactic never worth a profit of any kind to western countries, it is already bankrupted before it is implemented.

Therefore, the western countries must understand that if they want to do business with Africa they must discipline their pets (the dictators sponsored by them) so that peace will come to the continent. If they don’t discipline their pets there cannot be peace which is a favorable condition to do business. This is what we are clearly witnessing today in Ethiopia where the pets of Mr. Obama and Mr. Cameron commit genocide on the Oromo people for the last twenty five years, and savagely intensified and continued the genocide the last four months in the open air in front of the eyes of the world and we witness that the masters simply sit and watch the misery of this people like a nice movie.

We implore the world must witness that if Mr. Cameron visits Ethiopia during this on-going genocide it is clear that he recognized and approved the genocide. The Oromo people and other peoples of Ethiopia are being slaughtered by armaments donated or by the armaments purchased by the money donated by these countries tax payers money. We clearly observe that, besides the donation of arms and money there is a diplomatic encouragement for this brutal and barbaric act. This is a historical mistake which doesn’t work in the 21st century. The world peace-loving people must unconditionally condemn this.

These leaders of the western countries must understand that they are on the wrong side of history. They must come back to their senses, stop standing on the way of peoples’ fighting for their God given freedom, by supporting the tyrants and fascists. Because history doesn’t support them, history teaches us that if people under any sort of tyranny is determined to fight for its freedom no force can stop that. Therefore this leaders, instead of emboldening their fascist pets to kill more they must discipline them to be abide by the international/ universal law which they signed to look excellent pets. Finally we ask Mr. Obama and Mr. Cameron please discipline your pets in Ethiopia before they run out of time.

Oppressed people will take their freedom with their own struggle!!!!!

PAFD’s statement on current deal of the Chinas-Ethiopia- Djibouti Gas Exploitation in Ogaden, Ethiopia

The Ethiopian government’s “development strategy,” is founded on its policy of leasing millions of hectares of land to foreign investors, regardless of the rights and consequences for the local communities that depend on those lands. Implementation of this strategy as it is observed in Gambella, Oromia, Omo, Sidama and Benishangul-Gumuz involved grave human rights violations including coerced displacement, extrajudicial killings, political repression, and neglect of local livelihoods of the peoples and nations who have historically been marginalized and neglected by the governments. The foundation stone for a new mega gas project was laid on March 3, 2016, by the presence the Djiboutian President. The project is planned to install a natural gas pipeline, a liquefaction plant and an export terminal at Damerjog, Djibouti from the Ogaden as reported by Global Energy. PAFD believes that this is targeting the most vulnerable people on the continent, the Ogaden people.

Almost all the Ogaden territory are divided into 22 Concession Blocks are being offered unscrupulous corporations or countries by the TPLF/EPRDF regime–a government that is not democratically elected in a free and fair election and do not represent the peoples in Ethiopia. The Ogaden Somali nation, the true owner of the gas fields, is not a party to the land transactions between the TLPF/EPRDF and the third parties. The local Ogaden populace is neither consulted nor compensated for giving up these lands. The regime is uprooting the Ogadenis from their ancestral land and de-stroying the scared sites and the rich and unique plant and animal resources. The people who are uprooted and became landless in this process are perishing from natural and the regime-made famine and are being forced to migrate to Europe and America. The regime is also employing other strategies that are emptying the Somalis from their territory. Since 2007, the TPLF led Ethiopian Government blockaded aid and trade, which is making life difficult for the mil-lions of Somalis affected by famine, which is well known to the international community. During the last ten years the Ethiopian regime has used its army in Ogaden to displace the rural population from large tracts of the Ogaden grassland by burning traditional pasture rich areas in order to clear the land for oil exploration. It is crystal clear that enormous internal displacement is happening from El-Kuran to Djibouti to clear for the land for planned pipelines.

The PAFD strongly denounces and unequivocally condemns this reckless land Concession policy of the TPLF/EPRDF government, which further disenfranchises and impoverishes the Ogaden people. The land transaction be-tween the TPLF regime and the third parties displaces the rightful owners of the land—the Ogaden people—subjecting millions to further poverty, starvation, and death.

The PAFD warns the third parties to the Oppressed peoples land deals that their contracts are null and void as far as the Oppressed nations and the PAFD are concerned. We stress that they are entering into these contracts with a government that is not accountable to the people. Hence we call the third parties to immediately cease and desist from participation in such deals and transactions. This a pattern is an arc that stretches from displaced the border of Sudan to Somalia- displacement of thousands of Benishangul people near the grand Dam for “security reasons; confiscating the farmlands of Amhara people farmers in Amhara regions; disowning Oromo farmers in Addis Ababa Master plan and displacing whole communities in Omo, Gambela; destroying Sidama forests for Coffee plantations; and displacing thousands of Ogaden pastoralists from oil and Gas exploration sites.

The Ogaden people have endured subjugation, massacre and extra judicial killings, loss of freedom and dignity, political repression, poverty and famine, perpetrated by The TPLF/EPRDF regime. Hence PAFD calls upon, the Ogaden people and all other oppressed peoples, to stand up in unison against the TPLF’s regime until we all achieve our freedom and dignity, the right to influence our destiny including the use of our vital assets such as land, and a decent chance at escaping starvation and poverty.

Peace shall prevail!

What do Oromo protests mean for Ethiopian unity?

As protests in Ethiopia over the rights of the country’s Oromo people continue, Addis Ababa-based journalist James Jeffrey considers if they are threatening the country’s unity.

The latest round of bloody protests over Oromo rights had a tragically surreal beginning.

A bus filled with a wedding party taking the bride to the groom’s home was stopped at a routine checkpoint on 12 February near the southern Ethiopian town of Shashamane.

Local police told revellers to turn off the nationalistic Oromo music playing. They refused and the bus drove off.

The situation then rapidly escalated and reports indicate at least one person died and three others were injured after police fired shots.

The exact details of the incident are hard to verify, but what is clear is that days of protest followed, including armed local militia clashing with federal police, leaving seven policemen dead, the government says.

Why Ethiopia is making a historic ‘master plan’ U-turn


Since last November, Ethiopia has seen a third phase of the recent unrest in the Oromia region which has been unprecedented in its longevity and geographical spread.

The region is the largest in Ethiopia and the Oromos, who make up a third of the population, are the biggest of the country’s more than 80 ethnic groups.

Initially the protests were in reaction to a plan to expand the administrative border of the capital, Addis Ababa, which is encircled by Oromia.

But even after the region’s governing party, the Oromo People’s Democratic Organisation, which is part of Ethiopia’s governing coalition, shelved the plan in January, protests have continued.

Historical scars

“There is a strong sense of victimhood, extending back 150 years,” says Daniel Berhane, a prominent Addis Ababa-based political blogger, covering Ethiopia for the website Horn Affairs.

“People remember the history. The scars are still alive, such as how the Oromo language was suppressed until 20 years ago.”

Despite there being an ethnic basis to these protests, observers say that the deeper issues behind them, frustrations over land ownership, corruption, political and economic marginalisation, are familiar to many disenchanted Ethiopians.

The numbers killed since November following clashes between protesters and security forces given by international rights organisations, activists and observers range from 80 to 250.

The government has dismissed various death tolls as exaggerations, and said that a recent report on the situation by the New York-based Human Rights Watch (HRW) was an “absolute lie“.

‘Organised gangs’

Ethiopian citizens had a right to question the plan to expand Addis Ababa, but the protests were hijacked by people looking to incite violence, according to government spokesman Getachew Reda.

He says the security forces have faced “organised armed gangs burning down buildings belonging to private citizens, along with government installations”.

A security analyst who closely watches Ethiopia says “there could be radical elements and factions taking advantage, but you cannot define a movement by isolated events”.

Despite violent incidents, the protests have been described as “largely peaceful” by HRW and observers in Ethiopia.

“There is a perception of lack of competence in governance on the ground,” Mr Daniel says.

“There were easy remedies to appease initial protests, it was not hard science, but the right actions were not taken.”

In its defence, the government says it heeded the call of the people when it came to concerns over the Addis Ababa plan, and observers say the government deserves credit for withdrawing it.

But the same political observers add that the government must allow Ethiopians to exercise their constitutional right to protest, and handle events in a way that does not escalate violence.

The government has said that the protests and information about them have been manipulated by foreign-based opposition groups who are using social media to exaggerate what is going on for their own ends.

“The diaspora magnifies news of what is happening, yes, but no matter how much it agitates, it cannot direct [what’s happening] at village level in Ethiopia,” says Jawar Mohammed, executive director of one of those accused of fomenting conflict, US-based broadcaster Oromia Media Network (OMN).

“This is about dissatisfaction.”

Mr Jawar says the imprisonment of leaders of the Oromo Federalist Congress party, Oromia’s largest legally registered opposition political party, along with thousands of other Oromo political prisoners, makes it difficult to negotiate a lasting solution.

“Also what is the UK and US doing? As major donors to Ethiopia they should be taking the lead to get the government to work out an agreement.”

This is a long way from the heady days of Ethiopia’s new federal constitution after the overthrow of the military dictatorship in 1991.

That introduced a decentralised system of ethnic federalism, but this jars with the dominance of the governing Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF), which, along with its allies, holds every seat in parliament.

Federal tensions

“The ruling government is a victim of its own success,” the security analyst says.

“The constitution it developed made promises and people trusted the EPRDF. Now people are demanding those rights and the government is responding with bullets and violence.”

He adds that the government has expanded basic services and infrastructure, and appears to respect different cultural and ethnic identities, but it cannot reconcile this with its more authoritarian decision-making process.

The government’s hitherto successful job of holding together this particularly heterogeneous federation is not about to crumble, according to observers here.

But things may get worse before they get better, unless underlying sources of friction and frustration are addressed.

Dear Global Citizens,
We are writing on behalf of Oromo women and children who are dying and suffering in the hands of the Ethiopian government security forces. The Ethiopian government led by the Tigray Peoples Liberation Front (TPLF), a former guerrilla army, only represents six percent of the Ethiopian population. However, Oromo people who are the single largest ethnic/national group and represent 45 to 50 percent of the people in Ethiopia are denied the right to freely determine their social, economic, political, cultural and environmental affairs. In the absence of Oromo leadership, the TPLF government implemented policies that evicted millions of Oromo farmers from their farms and left millions of women, and children in poverty and famine.
Oromo people are an egalitarian society. Before the incorporation of Oromia into the Ethiopian empire, the Oromo people were ruled by democratically elected leaders known as Gada and Siiqee system. Siiqee is an Oromo women’s institution, organized to bring checks and balances in gender relations. Therefore, the Oromo people believe that under consecutive Ethiopian rulers, they have made backward social changes. Moving back from freely electing their leader (governed by democratically elected groups) and flourishing Siiqee institution (fostering gender equity) to languishing under dictatorial regimes that have no agenda for women’s rights. When the Oromos demand for self-rule, they are demanding to freely develop their institutions i.e. Gadaa and Siiqee and using these institutions in solving their problems.
The consecutive Ethiopian minority rulers denied the Oromo people the right to freely determine their social, economic, political, cultural and environmental rights. Violation of such rights is responsible for the famine, poverty, child and maternal mortality, higher illiteracy, and lack of clean water in Oromia. At present, over 18 million Ethiopians, mainly Oromos, are facing starvation and dependence on food aid. Oromo women and children are dying prematurely from starvation and preventable diseases. Oromo women who witness this are determined to change the political system that is putting them at risk and they are actively participating in peaceful demonstrations.
More potent than the hunger, malnutrition and disease is the brutality of the TPLF government of Ethiopia. Since November 2015 the Ethiopian government security forces have been indiscriminately killing peaceful demonstrators. The Ethiopian government is stifling any news on its own brutality in the killing of peaceful Oromo demonstrators, women and children indiscriminately.
Although, the European Union, USA, Canada and many other humanitarian organizations have expressed concerns and condemned these acts of killing the Ethiopian government has upgraded its attack against the Oromo, taking it to the proportion to genocide. As of today, about 400 Oromos have been killed, including many children and pregnant women. Many thousands have been maimed and over 12, 000 are imprisoned and tortured. Women and children are among the maimed, imprisoned and tortured. In the meantime, the Ethiopian government is still benefiting from the financial and political supports provided to it by Western governments. Their tax payers’ money is used to support the government that kills women, children, elderly people, and peaceful Oromo citizens.
We are writing to ask you join us to stop the Ethiopian government from killing, imprisoning and torturing women, children and other sectors of the Oromo society. We ask you join us in signing this petition to make sure that the tax payers’ money sent to the Ethiopian government is not used to kill children and women.
